Battlefield 6 Season 3 starts with biggest map yet | hands-on preview

Battlefield 6’s Season 3 kicks off on Tuesday May 12 with a reimagining of a classic Battlefield 4 map, now called Railway to Golmud, which will be the biggest map in Battlefield 6 yet. The original map was based in China, but now EA’s Battlefield Studios changed the location to Tajikistan to align with the events of the Battlefield 6 campaign. While it is simply a new map in a live operations strategy, it’s also the kind of execution that could help fulfill the promise between Battlefield Studios and its fans. Golmud is a playground for things to happen that can happen only in Battlefield. There’s more room in this game for aerial combat between jets and helicopters, which bring tremendous destructive for to the modern battlefield. But there’s also room for a mere soldier on the ground to bring down one of those goliaths with a single stone. I played the preview for a couple of hours and, while I’m not much of a Battlefield hero, I tasted some moments of victory that felt like the game was living up to its promise. But riding around in vehicles was a great way to find out just how spacious the map was. And if I found myself out in the open as a lone soldier in a field full of tanks, I would have given my kingdom away for just a rocket launcher or a bit of cover.

I think this gameplay is just what Battlefield 6 needs to attract some of its lapsed players back into the seasonal meat grinder.

More Season 3 details
Some crazy action in Season 3 Battlefield 6 Railway to Golmud map. Source: EA Philippe Ducharme, executive producer on Battlefield 6, said there are three phases to Season 3, starting with Warlords: Supremacy. On May 12, EA is releasing the Railway to Golmud map, which is significantly larger than Merak Valley, wich was the largest map released with Battlefield 6 when it first debuted in October 2025.

Golmud has a railway station, a village, a farm, and plenty of structures that bring some vertical elevation to the fighting. Above the action is a larger airspace for more intense dogfighting. And of course there are plenty of opportunities for destruction.

If all goes well with the introduction of ranked play in Battle Royale Redsec, where it will debut in quads, then EA will eventually roll out ranked play in Battlefield multiplayer. The prizes for top ranked play winners include emblems that range from rookie to master.

The seaonal content will be available across Battlefield 6 multiplayer and Redsec. There’s a number of new weapons like the M16 A4 assault rifle with burst fire and fully automatic modes, as well as the L-115 sniper rifle and RPK-74M machine gun.

Cairo Bazaar will have closer quarters action in Season 3 of Battlefield 6. Source: EA The second part of the season debutes on June 9 with Blast Point, said Roman Campos-Oriola, senior creative director at Battlefield Studios, in a press briefing. This phase, he said, is about “blowing shit up.”

The Obliteration mode from Battlefield 4 makes its return. This classic 32v32 mode returns as a more strategic, tightly contested variant where a single mistake can cost the match. A variant of this mode is also available as Tactical Obliteration, an 8v8 experience later in Phase 3. In this mode, you have to blow up three enemy sites using explosives you transport to the sites, and you have to do this before the enemy blows up your three sites.

Cairo Bazaar map in Season 3 of Battlefield 6. Source: EA There’s also the Cairo Bazaar map, reimaging of the Grand Bazaar map of Battlefield 3. It’s packed with tight alleyways and shops. It has new weapons like the PP-19 submachine gun and a new gadget, the RF Jammer, which causes nearby electronic devices to malfunction. This second part of the season runs through June 30.

Phase 3 starts on June 30 with High Value Target. It’s where you have to execute contracts that include eliminating high value soldiers on the battlefield or other missions. You can fulfill contracts like eliminating certain players, surviving for a set amount of time, destroying vehicles, achieving a high level of damage and more. There’s a tactial obliteration mode with teams of eight, and you’ll get the appropriate rewards for success.
