Kingdom Hearts 4 will not be delayed, creators assure fans at D23 showcase

Disney held its D23 event this weekend, where it revealed more about its pipeline of upcoming content in film, television and gaming. For the latter, that took the form of a new trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine, the reveal of a Star Wars Fortnite adventure called Smuggler’s Gambit, and, most notably, Kingdom Hearts news. It’s been four years since Square Enix revealed Kingdom Hearts 4, and we’ve not yet heard much about it in the interim. At this weekend’s event, however, we got an extended gameplay feature, as well as new story details. Pixar’s Coco was confirmed as an explorable world. We also learned that Donald, Goofy and Mickey himself will be playable for at least some part of the game, as they’ve been separated from series hero Sora. All of the above will no doubt please fans, but arguably the most important piece of news about Kingdom Hearts 4 came from a panel where series creator Tetsuya Nomura and co-director Tai Yasue spoke with Disney’s Nana Gadd. In the panel, Nomura noted that he’d seen online speculation that the game would be delayed from its announced “late 2027” release window, and said, “I want to set the record straight: That is not happening.” Yasue added, “I can confidently say and promise that it will launch in 2027. Schedule-wise, the development is very smooth. It’s not like an 80%, 90% – it’s a 100% thing. We’ll be there in 2027 for sure.” (The video of the panel has since been made private, but the interpretation was recorded by IGN.) Other than the game, Disney also announced a new anime Kingdom Hearts series, set in the game’s world but telling an original story. It has no confirmed release date, but is in development for the Disney+ streaming service.
