Destiny 2 brings a creative, comprehensive fix to the Champion problem in its final update
Destiny 2‘s endgame has long revolved around Champions, each requiring a specific type of counter that largely shifted every season. With Monument of Triumph, however, Bungie finally found a way to solve this problem for posterity: letting everything take on Champions. Every weapon will gain an Anti-Champion capability based on its fire rate and behavior, the studio confirmed in today’s Dev Insights blog post. This also applies to Exotics, which had their effect hand-picked based on what’s closest to its intended effect. More importantly, developers have removed any activation criteria: “No matter which you are using, simply firing the weapon will apply the associated effect immediately assuming you land your shots,” the blog post reads, with a highlight.https://embeds.beehiiv.com/a8d62108-86ed-4039-bf49-44877ba62c15 The change will become particularly palpable for weapons that counter Unstoppable and Overload. The former required you to aim down sights for a short length of time before its effect would kick in. The latter, however, required a short salvo of sustained fire before it activated, which was particularly awful considering some Overload Champions can teleport and even fire at you while stunned. The change was teased in yesterday’s dev insights, but wasn’t official (or detailed) until today. For most of the weapons in the game, this is what the division will look like, as per Bungie: Weapon Type Effect Aggressive Unstoppable High Impact Unstoppable Precision Barrier Adaptive Barrier Lightweight Overload Rapid-Fire Overload Several entries aren’t on this list, however. More unique archetypes, such as burst hand cannons, two-shot pulse rifles, and some grenade launchers, fall on a different list. More notably, Area Denial grenade launchers will have built-in Overload, while the Heavy Burst frame will grant Unstoppable to pulse rifles and hand cannons. Rocket pulses and sidearms also get Anti-Unstoppable capabilities. Speaking of the newer weapons, Renegades’ heat weapons can take on Overloads, but the Refurbished A99 heavy sniper rifle will get Anti-Barrier instead. The same applies to any possible weapons in its archetype, the Disruption sniper. Swords also get different buffs depending on their frames: Caster for Barriers, Vortex for Overloads, and Wave-Frame for Unstoppables. With every Exotic weapon getting Anti-Champion, I might finally put Leviathan’s Breath to rest. Screenshot by Destructoid And if that wasn’t good enough, Bungie is also letting players choose between seven seasonal artifacts, opening up tons of buildcrafting potential. This does not include a given artifact’s Anti-Champion mods; instead, we can skip to the good stuff to add a little extra to buildcrafting. The blog post showcases the artifact from Renegades and the Queensfoil Censer from Season of the Wish. The remaining artifacts seem to include the artifacts from The Edge of Fate, the three episodes in The Final Shape, and Season of the Deep. Expect changes to them, however. The fix to Champions lets the dev team future-proof one of Destiny 2‘s integral systems, keeping it functional and simple after the game ceases development. This means no matter when you jump into the servers, you’ll have an easier way to take on these types of enemies, all without requiring any additional input from the dev team. 0 The post Destiny 2 brings a creative, comprehensive fix to the Champion problem in its final update appeared first on Destructoid.
