Paralives early access impressions — The beginnings of the next great life sim
Paralives is officially set to enter early access soon, and I was lucky enough to receive access ahead of launch to see what the long-awaited life sim is all about. After years of development updates and growing excitement from a community eager for a fresh life sim, there’s naturally a lot of pressure on Paralives to deliver. While it’s still early days, what’s already here feels incredibly promising, and I can’t wait to see where this game goes. To be clear, Paralives is still very much a work in progress, with plenty of rough edges and missing pieces. The developers have been refreshingly transparent about the game’s current state, so as long as you manage your expectations going into it, the potential is clear. Even this early on, there’s already something genuinely exciting here for life sim fans. While the formula itself will be immediately familiar to fans of the genre, Paralives stands out thanks to its distinct art style, robust customization tools, and impressive attention to detail. A practically perfect Paramaker As with most life sims, Paralives begins with character creation—and it makes a strong first impression. The game’s Paramaker system is genuinely one of the most impressive character creators I’ve ever used, and as someone who tends to lose hours tweaking sliders in games like this, I could easily spend an entire session here alone. Nearly every aspect of your Parafolk can be customized in some way, from facial structure and body proportions to smaller details that many games simply don’t account for. If you’re the type of player who loves fine-tuning every last feature of a character, the Paramaker feels like a dream come true. In fact, the sheer amount of freedom available can feel a little overwhelming at first, but once the system clicks, it becomes incredibly intuitive and difficult to step away from. Screenshot by Destructoid There’s a color wheel for all elements, asymmetrical customization for many features, sliders for literally everything, including height, layered clothing options, and an absurd number of ways to personalize your Parafolk exactly how you want. The flexibility on display here already feels years ahead of what many life sim fans are used to. There’s still room for improvement, of course, particularly in expanding the available hairstyles and clothing options. However, the developers have confirmed more content in these areas is planned throughout early access, and even in its current state, the Paramaker already feels like one of Paralives’ standout features. Build without limits Build mode is also extremely impressive. Many objects feature adjustable sliders, allowing you to freely scale their size. This means beds, windows, tables, and just about everything else can be resized to fit your exact vision for a space. It’s a deceptively simple feature that’s easy to use and opens up a vast amount of creative freedom. Video by Destructoid Paired with the game’s gridless placement system, decorating feels wonderfully flexible. Objects can be nudged, layered, and arranged with a level of precision that encourages truly personalized spaces rather than rigid layouts. Maybe you want to resize a bed to absurd proportions, or place a cup teetering right at the edge of a table about to fall off for realism’s sake—if you can imagine it, the system generally lets you pull it off. It’s a great fit for players who enjoy cluttering interiors and creating lived-in spaces. What really stands out, though, is how intuitive it all feels in practice. Despite the depth of the tools it offers, build mode is easy to understand almost immediately, striking a perfect balance between creative freedom and usability. Whether you’re a dedicated builder or just someone who likes decorating occasionally, the system remains accessible, flexible, and surprisingly fun to experiment with. Storytelling shakes up everyday life One of my favorite features in Paralives is Storytelling, a system unlike anything I’ve seen in a life sim before. It essentially gives you new ways to shake up your gameplay through daily Stories you can select for your household at the start of each day. Screenshot by Destructoid These Stories can have a wide range of effects on your game. One day, I drew a scenario where my entire household got to ignore their hunger for a full day after overeating the day before. Another time, a Parafolk suddenly developed a secret crush. You might also get bonuses like earning extra money for each child in your household, or temporary skill boosts that last for the day. The possibilities feel varied enough that each day can meaningfully change how you app

The possibilities feel varied enough that each day can meaningfully change how you approach your gameplay. What makes the system work so well is that it never feels intrusive. It’s clearly designed with a lot of care behind it, offering just enough unpredictability for players who want a bit of chaos or narrative inspiration, while still remaining entirely optional in how heavily you engage with it. And for moments when you’re not sure what direction to take your household in next, these Stories offer a surprisingly effective way to spark new ideas and keep things moving forward.
Screenshot by Destructoid Beyond its standout systems, moment-to-moment life simulation follows a familiar structure for the genre. You manage your Parafolk’s needs, relationships, and daily routines, guiding them through work, social interactions, and personal goals. One thing that stood out to me in particular is that building relationships—especially romantic ones—feels a bit more challenging than in some other life sims. It’s not necessarily a negative, either; if anything, it gives interactions a slightly more grounded, realistic pace that makes connections feel a bit more earned over time. While this part of the game is still relatively straightforward in its current early access state, it helps anchor the rest of the experience between all of the more experimental systems.
Screenshot by Destructoid While Paralives is still undeniably early in its development journey, what’s here so far feels extremely promising. Between its impressive customization systems, thoughtful design choices, and transparent development approach, it already feels like a game life sim fans should keep a close eye on. If the team can successfully build upon this promising foundation throughout early access, I’m confident that Paralives could eventually become something truly special for the genre.Paralives launches in early access for PC and Mac on May 25 for $39.99, with the developers planning years of free updates leading up to a full 1.0 release, as well as free expansions continuing after launch.
