Everything we know about The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past—Potential release date, story setting, and more

If you were to tell me I’d be writing about a new The Witcher 3 expansion this time last year, I wouldn’t believe you. It’s so rare to see developers revisit their own games in ways that don’t involve remaking or remastering them or, in extreme cases, restoring cut content. But CDPR is a wildcard of a company and always has been, and it seems it just cannot stop itself from patching or updating something even when it said, “This is it, no more shiny new stuff.” The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is going to be a big one by all accounts, so here’s everything we know about this new expansion pack. https://embeds.beehiiv.com/a8d62108-86ed-4039-bf49-44877ba62c15 The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past: Setting, release date, and more details We’re going back to Cintra, probably. Image via CDPR The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is going to be a fully fledged expansion pack to CDPR’s 2015 title, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It’ll come 12 years after the original came out, targeting a 2027 release. It’s also being co-developed with Fool’s Theory, a team working on The Witcher 1 remake. Though rumored to be a DLC prior to its announcement, CDPR has confirmed that this is a real expansion pack and not a DLC, with the company saying the latter is often smaller in scale and given out for free to players (thanks IGN). The Witcher 3 itself had around 16 free DLCs come out within its first year or so, including cosmetics and a whole new contract. The company went on to explain that we can expect Songs of the Past to be on par with Blood and Wine, another expansion pack for The Witcher 3, released in the summer of 2016. This expansion has around 30 to 40 hours of gameplay, adds an entire region to the game, and was very obviously created to be the proper “ending” to The Witcher 3 in general, with Geralt settling down in Corvo Bianco to potentially retire. If we’re to consider these details, then it’s not wild to assume Songs of the Past will bring us to a new sizable region and provide some 20, if not more, hours of gameplay with unique locations, new contracts, and other content, perhaps even new mechanics or changes to the game’s core systems, much like Blood and Wine introduced mutations. Geralt’s return to Cintra could set the story up for The Witcher 4, as there’s no better place to do so. Image via IGN Based on fan theories, which were created around details and clues CDPR said it’ll deliberately leave in various promotional material, Songs of the Past could be set in Cintra and revolve around Belleteyn, a festival mirroring Mayday celebrations among Slavic cultures, which Witcher author Sapkowski drew heavily from. Belleteyn is an important date within the broader narrative’s context, with Yennefer of Vengerberg born during the festival, while Ciri also has strong ties to it. Cintra, of course, is a central location in the books, as it was ruled by Ciri’s grandmother, Calanthe, and is the place where Geralt was bound by destiny to the ashen-haired girl and first met Emperor Emhyr. There’s a lot to unpack here, too much for a brief explainer, but suffice it to say that Cintra is a phenomenal location storywise and one we really need to see firsthand in the games. Other rumors suggest we’ll also see Cidaris, but all of this is just speculation at this point. The promotional music for the expansion is dark and Slavic in tone and genre, so I’d expect the game to revolve around places near Temeria and with Cintra and Cidaris both falling in that category. We’ll know more details following Gamescom 2026, which Destructoid aims to attend, so we’ll be your go-to source of information. In the meantime, I can tell you to expect either a $19.99 price tag for this expansion pack or CDPR decides to sell it separately, though I have a feeling they’ll sell it pre-packaged with the Game of the Year edition, which you can buy for peanuts every couple of weeks. 0 The post Everything we know about The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past—Potential release date, story setting, and more appeared first on Destructoid.
