Deltarune Chapter 5 update stops flirting from freezing the game and makes the final boss easier if you suck
A new Deltarune Chapter 5 update targets bugs and makes its final boss slightly easier if you suck at the game. (Don't worry, this is a safe space.) The Undertale offshoot launched yesterday to some impressive numbers, easily beating its previous Steam player peak as fans practically swarmed to find out what happens next in the episodic RPG. Theorists and casual fans alike had spent all year channelling their inner Charlie Day – and by that I mean speculating wildly – so its popularity isn't a huge surprise, but Chapter 5 didn't launch unblemished. On social media, the developer shared a list of bugs that it was working on squashing, including one where "flirting can freeze the game" during a boss battle. A new hotfix update has now addressed that and more. Using the 'flirt' act will no longer softlock the game when the music slows down during a certain fight that can't be named for probably spoilerific reasons (prepare your best one-liners, then), but Deltarune is more crash-resistant across the board now. "Fixed a softlock when pressing Z&X simultaneously when interacting with a disappearing fox," the patch notes read. "Fixed a crash when knives spawn from an aqua-colored enemy, and after said enemy is defeated. Fixed a crash when collecting candy from a green-colored enemy." Another curious bug would make Kris gigantic and the game unplayable if you had "modified your save file in a previous chapter," though that's also not a problem anymore. Perhaps my favorite tweak is one that comes at the end of the episode. "The last boss of the chapter becomes gradually easier after losing an excessive amount of times in one play session," the dev writes. The game itself won't shame you for not gitting gud, but in the back of your head you'll know Toby Fox and co. just did the gaming equivalent of handing a toddler toy kitchen utensils. Restarting the play session will reset the difficulty, if you'd like to conquer the boss without any help. "We will continue to address bugs as quickly as we can," the dev promises. Deltarune Chapter 6 is "aiming for a 2027 release," Undertale legend Toby Fox casually reveals on Steam after Chapter 5's record-breaking launch. [/url]
