Battle in the WoT Blitz Reforged Update

The World of Tanks Blitz Reforged Update launches on June 17. New engine, new tools, sharper battles. Today, we're looking at what changes in combat—and what must still feel unmistakably Blitz.

A New Engine Matters Most When the Battle Feels Right

Moving to Unreal Engine® opened the door to new tools, sharper visuals, richer effects, and more detailed locations. At first, we pushed hard into that new space. Too hard.

Early tests made one thing clear: the game could look different, but it still had to feel like Blitz. The dynamics, readability, and gameplay feel shouldn't get lost in the engine change.

So we pulled back, worked through player feedback test after test, and focused on the real target: a new engine, but with the same battle identity.

Maps Do More Than Look Good. They Shape the Fight

Every battle starts with the ground under your tracks. A map decides how fast you reach a position, which cover you can trust, and how quickly you can read the next threat.

In the WoT Blitz Reforged Update, updated maps are not just better-looking versions of familiar locations. They are built to serve battles first. That means clearer lanes, stronger landmarks, more readable spaces, and visuals that help you understand the battle instead of fighting for your attention.

The new engine gives us more control over battlefield vegetation: denser greenery, more varied bushes, and a new vegetation type—tall grass. Concealment values have been reworked around these changes. Tall grass provides less concealment than bushes, but it can still help low-profile vehicles stay hidden in the right position. Pick the route and keep your silhouette low, and even open ground can give you a chance to stay unseen.

Sierra Picada Map: Built to Test Your Tank

The WoT Blitz Reforged Update also brings a new map: Sierra Picada.

Mountains, desert, a town that probably had a quiet morning before the tanks arrived—now it's a battlefield. The scenery sets the stage, but the fight is what matters.

While working on Sierra Picada, we kept in mind that even in a new location, combat should stay familiar and intuitive.

  • Heavy tanks will clash in the industrial zone of Sierra Picada. There is plenty of cover to work with: containers, buildings, and a massive communication tower in the center of the area.

  • Medium and light tanks will fight through Mexican-inspired landscapes near the wind turbines. This part of the map lets you utilize the terrain, with plenty of hills and rocks to use while reloading.

  • Tank destroyers get their own options too. Bushes are scattered across the map, so find the right one, settle in, and send shells from distance.

The center of the map is a dividing zone—and a surprisingly charming town. Shops, workshops, and a small diner in the middle. Yes, the diner works as cover too. Not bad service!

The map has plenty of atmosphere, and we recommend taking it for a run in a Training Room: admire the unusual cacti, drive through the town streets, and maybe recognize a few objects along the way.

Visual Effects Add Weight, Not Noise

Snow falling from rooftops. Ice catching the light. Smoke, fire, hit effects, shell impacts, penetration marks, new explosions, and object destruction effects. All of it has to pass the same test: does it make the moment feel stronger without creating visual overload or getting in the way of gameplay?

The goal is not spectacle for its own sake. The goal is depth. You should feel the shot, see the impact, understand the situation.

That was in our mind when we worked on unique shape and visual design for each type of shell. Shooting should feel more impactful and clearer: you will be able to see both the shell and its flight path. The same goes for object destruction effects. They will look more striking and realistic, adding more atmosphere to the feel of battle.

Our goal is simple: keep the battle readable while making every hit feel heavier.

Performance Is Part of the Fight

Better visuals ask more from hardware. Some low-end devices will no longer be supported, but we have worked hard to keep the compatibility range as broad as possible.

Performance has been heavily optimized, and that work will continue. Because visual quality only matters if battles stay playable. Stable performance and responsive control are not extras. They are the base.

The Work Continues—with Players in the Loop

Combat in Blitz has been polished over years of updates. With the move to a new engine, some of that polish still needs to be brought back and sharpened again. And we will continue working on that.

The WoT Blitz Reforged Update brings a new foundation: better tools, broader possibilities, and more room to keep improving Blitz with players who know exactly how combat should feel. The real test is the one that starts when you hit the button.

See you in battle!
