After Baldur's Gate 3, Divinity scholar tries to unmask Larian's next big RPG villain by painstakingly translating ancient symbols from behind-the-scenes footage

While we eagerly await the next drop of information for the upcoming Divinity game from Larian Studios, one fan believes they've uncovered a secret hidden in plain sight. Some behind-the-scenes footage of the first trailer appears to contain a byzantine clue about who the RPG's major antagonist will be. This line of investigation comes from WolfheartFPS, an RPG aficionado on Twitter. They noticed that the symbols on the crown of the man who's immolated in the teaser are different in the making of clips shared by studio Unit Image, who oversaw the CG announcement trailer. Through a bit of digging, they realized the symbols are derived from Elder Futhark, an ancient alphabet. "It's tough to decipher as Elder Futhark is significantly more phonetic than modern English, and there are also several variant systems," they explain in the post. "You can't directly translate to modern English." I say interpret, because there's a certain amount of guesswork here - long-dead languages weren't designed for modern internet sleuths - but this phrasing works because the Lord of Chaos is a figure in the Divinity lore. He goes right back to Divine Divinity, in fact, and as Wolfheart points out, a prevailing theory among the fanbase is that you'll finally face him in this next installment. That's definitely one way to ramp up the stakes after the Original Sin games and Baldur's Gate 3. As yet, the trailer and this newer production footage are all we have to go on.
