It’s official, folks: Star Citizen has collected over a billion USD in funding after 14 years of development. Though we reported it had already crossed that mark last summer in total, it’s racked in around $150 million since then on its funding stats page. As per Roberts Space Industries’ funding page, Star Citizen has collectively raised over a billion USD through donations, despite having no actual release date. Last summer, we wrote how the game had already amassed over a billion based on internal communications, though that probably included other funding means and not just community donations. Variety reports Squadron 42 is in its “closing stages,” but I’ll believe it when I see it. Many gamers around the world do not think Star Citizen will ever come out. As we wrote previously, many believe the game is a borderline scam, as well as that its dreams and ambitions and potential are as much a product as the game itself. The journey towards this imagined biggest, best game of all time is what’s being sold to players, and many of them are actively funding the adventure rather than the end.
