Star Citizen officially crosses $1 billion in crowdfunding, though release is nowhere in sight
It’s official, folks: Star Citizen has collected over a billion USD in funding after 14 years of development. Though we reported it had already crossed that mark last summer in total, it’s racked in around $150 million since then on its funding stats page. As per Roberts Space Industries’ funding page, Star Citizen has collectively raised over a billion USD through donations, despite having no actual release date. Last summer, we wrote how the game had already amassed over a billion based on internal communications, though that probably included other funding means and not just community donations. Perhaps we’ll see it release in full some day. Image via CIG https://embeds.beehiiv.com/a8d62108-86ed-4039-bf49-44877ba62c15 The game raised over $32 million in November alone and received between eight and 13 million every single month since October. Cash continuously pours in from players who not only donate voluntarily but also purchase and invest in the game’s immense economy, buying ships and other in-game items for copious amounts of money. Star Citizen has been in development for 14 years and still has no concrete release date. Its spin-off, Squadron 42, was meant to come out this year, though even that appears to be more hope than reality. Variety reports Squadron 42 is in its “closing stages,” but I’ll believe it when I see it. Many gamers around the world do not think Star Citizen will ever come out. As we wrote previously, many believe the game is a borderline scam, as well as that its dreams and ambitions and potential are as much a product as the game itself. The journey towards this imagined biggest, best game of all time is what’s being sold to players, and many of them are actively funding the adventure rather than the end. That’s something, at least. 0 The post Star Citizen officially crosses $1 billion in crowdfunding, though release is nowhere in sight appeared first on Destructoid.
