Sonic boss Takashi Iizuka says some "surprises will need to remain secret for a little longer," but there's more to come to celebrate the blue blur's 35th anniversary

After there's been zero word on the next mainline Sonic the Hedgehog game, Sonic Team lead Takashi Iizuka says there are more surprises in store for the series 35th anniversary. Sonic the Hedgehog is pretty constant as of late, whether it be remaster, spinoff or main series game, the series has effectively been a yearly release for a while now. However, it's been a while since the series' last 3D entry with 2022's Sonic Frontiers, and fans have been feverishly waiting for what's coming next for the series – especially in the wake of the fairly divisive Sonic Superstars in 2023. But aside from a second wave of DLC for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and the collab game between Sonic and indie hit Pico Park, things have been quiet throughout Sonic's 35th anniversary year. Speaking to Pocket Tactics, Iizuka was asked what we can expect from the series' anniversary celebrations. He responds "We want the 35th anniversary to recognize every part of Sonic's history while also looking ahead" in reference to the likes of Sonic in Concert, he adds, "Throughout the year, fans will see Sonic through games, music, events, collaborations, merchandise, and other special projects." Iizuka then promises more surprises on top of what has already been announced, saying "other surprises will need to remain secret for a little longer. I know that Sonic fans are extremely observant, so I must be careful not to provide any unintended clues!" He adds "We hope there will be something that appeals to fans from every era." Sega did tease what would become Frontiers at the end of a 30th anniversary stream, before it was fully revealed at The Game Awards 2021, so if Sega are set on revealing what's next for Sonic this year, maybe keep an eye on Keighley's show this year. Sonic Team boss says the most memorable game he's ever worked on is Sonic Adventure 2, and he was "really delighted" its story was used for the third movie [/url]
