Rockstar to meet with employees looking to unionize in hopes of avoiding potential strike ahead of GTA 6 launch

Grand Theft Auto 6 developers at Rockstar Games looking to unionize for better working conditions will meet with representatives of the studio to negotiate, according to a new report. Much of Rockstar’s workforce is based in the United Kingdom—including Dundee, Edinburgh, Leeds, Lincoln, and London—and the IWGB Game Workers Union said it represents a “significant portion” of that workforce looking to unionize. There is so much that is special about the studio and the work we put out. We want to protect that. When people are confronted with pay disparities, excessive overtime or a lack of flexibility in arrangements, they are not in the best position to do their best work. We want to sit down with management and build a future where both the games and the conditions of the people who make them are as strong as possible.” In an effort to keep the peace ahead of GTA 6’s massive launch in November, a Rockstar representative told IGN in its own statement that it will eventually meet with the workers to avoid a potential strike. “We have received a request from a union seeking to discuss voluntary recognition,” Rockstar’s statement said. “We value an open and constructive dialogue with all stakeholders and will arrange to meet.” Last year, Rockstar Games fired 31 employees for leaking “specific game features from upcoming and unannounced titles,” but the IWGB alleged it was an issue of union busting. “We strive to make the best games possible by giving our talented teams world-class work environments and ongoing career opportunities,” Rockstar’s statement continued. “We have fostered a culture which is focused on teamwork, excellence, and kindness, and where we support and reward the team across all levels of the business through competitive compensation and benefits policies. We are proud that as a result, our employee retention is well above the industry standard.” Image via Rockstar Games GTA 6 will likely be the biggest entertainment launch of all time when it drops on Nov. 19. With several months of polish and completing the game to go, the developers seem to hold a fair amount of power in the negotiation as a strike could potentially jeopardize the launch. When the meeting will take place is currently unknown, but the game is now less than six months away from launch. 0 The post Rockstar to meet with employees looking to unionize in hopes of avoiding potential strike ahead of GTA 6 launch appeared first on Destructoid.
