Peace for Our Time | Democratic & Shared Branches
Ahoj! I’m Spicyalfredo, joined by marijn211 and Abbus. We can’t wait to finally show you what we’ve been working on with the “Peace for our Time” focus pack! This DLC will feature a complete rework of everything Czechoslovakia, with a few extras that we will show in this and the following dev diaries. We’ll jump right into the Historical Context that Czechoslovakia finds herself in, before diving into the democratic and shared branches. Historical ContextCzechoslovakia finds itself in an interesting position at the end of the first half of the 1930s. The worst effects of the Great Depression are now behind her, and the country is looking to further its industrial development. The political leadership is under no illusion that their neighbours are potential threats, as they all have designs to redraw the Czechoslovakian borders in their favour. The chief among them is a rearming Germany. Money has already flowed into fortification projects, and ongoing army reforms are underway to address these potential threats. Ongoing diplomatic outreach to the East and West is also underway to reassure Czechoslovakia of its position in the case conflict does arise. Starting leader and National SpiritsHistorical BranchThe Agrarian party has led a broad coalition that has kept Czechoslovakian politics relatively stable through the many crises it has faced. The democratic branch has two paths; one is the historical path, which works with many supporters within the Agrarian party ranks and looks to strengthen the coalition it leads. Greater outreach to the Western Powers is available via this branch as well. So you can at least try to make sure you’re not thrown under any Sudetenland-shaped buses by your ‘Allies’. The government will try to make an outreach to the western powers while stabilizing the broad coalition further.Alt-DemocraticIf instead you decide to make a deal with the devil by allying with the autonomous bloc, Milan Hodža will have more political leverage to explore his ambitious goal of trying to establish a Central European federation, although doing so will come at a high price. The middle parts of the democratic tree are shared between the two branches.Sometimes, more aggressive means are required to preserve democracy in Central EuropeShared DiplomacyTo maximize the number of foreign policy options available to the player, we’ve put a heavy emphasis on shared paths. The left side of the focuses below is accessible for the democratic and communist paths, while the volunteer focuses are always available. It includes new options to gain allies for the Little Entente, as well as new options for stronger cooperation with these allies. The background of the Airlift Soviet Support focus here is noteworthy, as this plan to fly Soviet troops and materiel into Czechoslovakia would have been of unprecedented scale, reminiscent of the Berlin airlift many years later. We’ve represented this operation as a unique air raid, so various factors can influence its outcome.Industry BranchCzechoslovakia contained a lot of the key arms and civilian industry within Austria-Hungary. Investments during the 1930s focused on industrializing the economy further. There are plenty of options to improve the many areas within your industry, be it the civilian or military industry.Plenty of options to build your industrial legacy as CzechoslovakiaThe eagle eye among you might have noticed some focus overlays on some of the focus of this branch. Let’s zoom in on one for a closer look:Tank Icon for Tank Priority Focus, Wrench Icon for Heavy Industry Priority Focus etcTo do some focuses in the Industrial and Army Branches, you must have selected a certain Industrial Priority focus to be able to select the national focus. The overlays relate to the focus’s Industrial Priorities requirements, so you can see them at a glance without having to hover over each focus to glean the requirements. What’s an Industrial Priority, you ask? Well, I’ll have to hand the dev diary over to my partner in crime Marijn, to discuss Industry Priority GUI Mechanic!Industry PrioritySitting between the army and industry branches will be a brand new focus “inlay GUI” which allows you to choose the prioritized sector of your arms industry. Some focuses will require a certain prioritization, while others will affect the modifiers that the prioritization options grant. Choosing a certain sector as a priority for a longer period of time will scale its benefits (and small maluses) linearly by the optimization tier, which increases over time. The Weapons Industry Prioritization mechanic, the default option at the top, is selected, granting slight bonuses to civilian productionThis new mechanic represents the scale and modernity of the Czechoslovak arms industry, which can also be observed in the focus of the industrial branch as mentioned above.Military BranchThe Czech Army was in the middle of reforms and modernization to meet the threats that they saw on the horizon. Starting leader and National Spirits

The government will try to make an outreach to the western powers while stabilizing the broad coalition further.

The middle parts of the democratic tree are shared between the two branches.

Sometimes, more aggressive means are required to preserve democracy in Central Europe

We’ve represented this operation as a unique air raid, so various factors can influence its outcome.

Plenty of options to build your industrial legacy as Czechoslovakia
The eagle eye among you might have noticed some focus overlays on some of the focus of this branch. Let’s zoom in on one for a closer look:

Tank Icon for Tank Priority Focus, Wrench Icon for Heavy Industry Priority Focus etc
To do some focuses in the Industrial and Army Branches, you must have selected a certain Industrial Priority focus to be able to select the national focus. The overlays relate to the focus’s Industrial Priorities requirements, so you can see them at a glance without having to hover over each focus to glean the requirements.

The Weapons Industry Prioritization mechanic, the default option at the top, is selected, granting slight bonuses to civilian production
This new mechanic represents the scale and modernity of the Czechoslovak arms industry, which can also be observed in the focus of the industrial branch as mentioned above.

Plenty of options for a lot of playstyles
The fortification programs have been transformed from focuses into decisions. Allowing Czechoslovakia to walk and chew gum. These decisions will use civilian factories while they run to represent the massive economic investment that these fort programs took.

Choose wisely, as you can only do one at a time

You do have the opportunity to direct those funds elsewhere…
Let us know what you think! Next time we’ll be looking at the Divided Nation rework and the alternate history branches of the Czechoslovak focus tree. We hope to see you then!
