Death is supposed to be the final sleep, and the afterlife the ultimate rest after a life that was hopefully well lived. Alternately, needing to rest is what people exhausted from a decades-long trek through life need, but the soul has a little more resiliency now that the pesky body isn't saying how tired it is all the time. When a new soul wakes up on the banks of the Nile, Anubis gives them a place to stay in a friendly little settlement, and while it's a roof and bed that's the best that can be said about it. Everything is run down and broken, but on the plus side seeing as this is the soul's literally-forever home that gives them something to do as they get settled into the afterlife.
