I can parry the meteor that made dinosaurs go extinct? Hell yeah, I’m in

It is theorized that 66 million years ago, dinosaurs went extinct because of an asteroid so big that its impact devastated the Earth’s surface with natural disasters. But what if I told you that all those years ago, long before humanity existed, dinosaurs roamed the earth with giant greatswords? You’re probably wondering: Where did they get greatswords from? Were there dinosaur blacksmiths? Did they have religion? Humanity has always asked questions about our existence, our place in the world, and the meaning of it all. Everything will be answered in Jean Nguyen’s Dinoblade, the dinosaur game of all dinosaur games. That’s right, there’s a dinosaur soulslike inbound, and I can’t quite get over it myselfhttps://embeds.beehiiv.com/a8d62108-86ed-4039-bf49-44877ba62c15 Screenshot by Destructoid Here I was intrigued by The Lost Wild, still waiting for a Jurassic Park: Survival announcement, and praying for Capcom to remake Dino Crisis next. Little did I know there were sword-wielding dinosaurs right around the corner, battling it out for alpha and consuming the souls of fallen dinos. It’s a no-brainer. The trailer showed our protagonist, a young Spinosaurus, parrying a meteor for goodness sake. A goddamn meteor. What better way to meet your maker? I just had to hop into the demo. There’s no denying Dinoblade’s drawing inspiration directly from the GOAT, FromSoftware Image by Team Spino LLC. Based on what I’ve seen so far, the combat is decent. It’s easy to master, there are combos with light and heavy attacks, and an interesting mechanic to summon the souls of defeated bosses like a dinosaur tag team. You can jump, dodge, and parry attacks while learning enemy moves and how to best them. It’s the classic soulslike recipe for success. Dinoblade will even feature a Boss Rush mode upon completing the game, and likely include multiple endings depending on your final choice: Rewrite history or leave the past where it belongs. Screenshot by Destructoid Screenshot by Destructoid Its Souls references couldn’t be more obvious. The soulslikeness of it all; the combat, the checkpoints made of rock acting in place of a bonfire, upgrading stats via souls you’ve collected from fallen enemies. Visually, Dinoblade is everything you’d want from a soulslike. There’s an open world to explore, mobs to kill, a banging soundtrack to get the blood pumping, and an alpha looming over each biome. The downside is that the world is extremely barebones and a little rough around the edges. This could be because it’s a demo, which is very well received on Steam, but the full release will likely have a lot more going for it. Regardless of its flaws (it’s bound to have some), Dinoblade is going to be absurdly good fun because it’s not trying to be a serious contender in an already saturated market. Dinosaurs gripping massive swords in their mouths, hitting combos like a Street Fighter veteran? You know we’re in for a wild, earth-shattering ride. There was support both on YouTube and Patreon, and by September 2023, Jean decided to expand the project into a video game.
