GTA Online got a hantavirus cruise mission, but Rockstar quickly contained its spread

A fan recently created a mission in GTA Online where players raided a ship where a hantavirus breakout was taking place. Rockstar was quicker to address the situation than most and swiftly deleted the mission, but proof of the mission’s existence remains. It’s not every day that GTA characters get off their couch to do something for the greater good of humankind, but for a short while, they could, and some sure did. This time, players approached GTA‘s counterpart to the infamous ship where a viral breakout took place in real life. The task? Simply to “Stop Hantavirus.” Ever since the release of GTA 5, the series has been known for its elaborate heists that result in highly memorable set pieces. I never got to play the hantavirus cruise mission, but from what I’ve gathered, it features very little planning. Because why would anyone want any of that when dealing with a possibly world-ending virus? Still, it sure does feature an amazing set piece, the one where you get to fly by the infamous cruise ship with a gunship and blow it all the way to hell, just like the CDC would’ve wanted (the Liberty City one, at least).https://embeds.beehiiv.com/a8d62108-86ed-4039-bf49-44877ba62c15 ???????????? https://t.co/7NZUnzPW7s— Reda⚡️ (@Redatuconnais1) May 19, 2026 And, even though a bit tone-deaf for all the people who had to go on an extended vacation aboard the IRL counterpart of the ship, and all the people currently worried about the possibility that we might be looking at another pandemic, I’m gonna have to admit that the mission seems just like plain ol’ fun. Also, it’s 2026, so everything is a meme and, in the absence of GTA 6, an excuse to create more GTA content. There are worse ways they could be spending their time. The only thing I find strange is that Rockstar took no time to get rid of it, considering the GTA series doesn’t tend to shy away from controversial topics. Need I remind you that GTA 5 features a mission where we straight up torture a guy, and it’s kinda played for laughs? The only complaint I have regarding the hantavirus cruise mission is that, sadly, I didn’t get to play it. Still, there is something to love about the idea that fans are creating cool stuff to keep us away from the serious issues plaguing real modern life, by having us fight them in games, via very uncomplicated video game means. 0 The post GTA Online got a hantavirus cruise mission, but Rockstar quickly contained its spread appeared first on Destructoid.
