Fortnite’s official Star Wars experiences feature expanded voice lines

Epic Games and Disney are giving certain creators expanded access to Star Wars visual and audio assets to build select Fortnite experiences. Today, April 30, Epic is publishing three official Star Wars islands. These islands were developed in collaboration with prominent Fortnite creators, who gained early access to the Star Wars Fortnite assets announced last month. Unlike other creator-made Star Wars islands, these islands are published by Epic itself, rather than the creators or their studios — and they contain some exclusive assets unavailable in the general asset pack shared with creators last month, including select voice lines. The official Star Wars experiences published today include Galactic Siege, a king-of-the-hill shooter game with similarities to Star Wars: Battlefront, developed by JOGO Studios; Droid Tycoon, a droid-economy game created by Future Trash; and Escape Vader, a Darth-Vader-centric survival horror title developed by Beyond Creative. Last week, GamesBeat attended a demo event hosted by Epic and Disney to play the games and speak with their creators. (Disclosure: Epic Games provided Uber codes to help me attend the demo event.) “It was pretty clear from the start, when we announced, that every Fortnite creator has their own Star Wars story they want to tell,” said Epic Games senior director of ecosystem growth Andre Balta during an introductory talk at the event. “It’s been awesome to see the passion come through, and this will lead to Fortnite having the largest collection of official Star Wars experiences players can enjoy.” The in-depth nature of the integration of Star Wars IP into the official experiences was evident in Escape Vader. In addition to the eponymous villain’s iconic (and imposing) breathing sound effects, the game included actual voice lines from Star Wars, with Darth Vader calling out threatening phrases during his slow advance toward the player character. Due to the potential media rights headaches involved, past Fortnite IP integrations have not included voice lines, and the Star Wars launch was no exception — but the creators of Escape Vader at Beyond Creative felt they would help kick the game up a notch, and asked Epic and Disney for permission to bring in a few Vader voice lines. “We curated specific lines from the movies that he says — just following the script — and requested that from Lucasfilm and Disney, and we had the honor of actually having access to some of those lines,” said Beyond Creative founder and chief executive officer Kasper Weber in an interview with GamesBeat at the demo event. Working more closely and directly with the rights holders gave Fortnite creators involved in the demo event more confidence incorporating Star Wars music into their experiences as well. Licensed music has always been a challenge for creators on Fortnite; even music that is approved for licensing might only be approved for a limited time and can be taken away at any moment, making creators wary of incorporating it into their islands. But experiences like “Galactic Siege” heavily use official Star Wars music, with JOGO Studios co-founder and chief operating officer Chad Mustard describing music as one of the most exciting assets available to creators in an interview with GamesBeat. “Epic and Disney have been giving us a ton — they gave us all the music,” he said. “The Star Wars theme song is iconic, and the Imperial March. It’s crazy that that’s just in the game, and anyone can use it.” Regardless of exactly which IP assets creators requested and how they planned to use them, it was clear that Disney was very much in support of the creative activity showcased during last week’s demo event. Ahead of the demonstrations, Disney Games and Digital Entertainment vice president Will Rosas took the stage to welcome creators and players and share Disney’s vision for the integration initiative. “We are truly appreciative of the partnership and the thoughtfulness between Epic and Lucasfilm — the care and the attention to detail for all of these assets,” Rosas said during the introductory talk, “and I think fans are really going to appreciate that.” The post Fortnite’s official Star Wars experiences feature expanded voice lines appeared first on GamesBeat.
