Fears to Fathom – Scratch Creek: Story and ending, explained

Things are a little different in this episode of Fears to Fathom. In Scratch Creek, there’s two playable characters on offer: Tessa Langley and Marcus Reed, the former moving state to support her boyfriend’s career. The story begins on moving day. Already running late, their road trip takes a turn for the worst long before they set sail. The first [Together] episode of Fears to Fathom‘s co-op adventure places a twenty-something-year-old couple in uncharted territory. Their worst fears strike when moving house goes horribly wrong. The story of Fears to Fathom – Scratch Creek
The drive
Image by rayll Once Tessa and Marcus are packed up and good to go, their route is altered to Old Cascade Highway due to heavy traffic on the interstate. A cameo from YouTuber DashieGames on a radio broadcast describes strong wind, making driving dangerous. Like a scene in FROM, a tree falls in the center of the road. The couple move it and make their way to a gas station to refuel. Inside is a tent and a mysterious man who warns them not to stay in Scratch Creek for too long. The man insinuates Marcus is not safe and may become a target of a race crime.

Occasionally cars pass by, but always leaving Scratch Creek, not entering. That is until a truck appears at the rear, honking until blasting past the couple at the Sunview Motel. They arrive at another gas station in search of car repairs due to a coolant leak. The back of the gas station has a lumber yard, where a strange smell lingers in the air and a saw sounds off in the distance. The next stranger, Harry Sweeney, is a little more welcoming than others, but there’s still that uncomfortable bigotry regarding Marcus’s skin color.

Car troubles
Image by rayll It’s a scary thought what kind of reception Marcus would have got if Tessa wasn’t with him and whether their car breaking down was targeted when the tree “fell.” It’s perhaps more appropriate to think that the tree was purposely cut down, blamed on the windy weather, to distract the couple so that the car could be sabotaged.

The station owner, Buck, pulls Harry aside, whose tune changes after a talking-to about fixing their car. It’s clear Buck here wants Marcus to head on over to Bill’s house. He even goes as far as rejecting Marcus’s money, claiming “we ain’t ever had one of his kind in my store.” There’s no fixing the car, not when the sabotage was planned from the start. Tessa and Marcus have no choice but to listen to Buck as it’d be too dangerous to drive the car back onto the interstate.

Into Scratch Creek
Screenshot by Destructoid Scratch Creek locals have an air of intensity about them, paired with proudly flying the Confederate States of America flag outside their houses. The locals believe city folk look down on them. Their threatening nature tied with their devout beliefs creates perpetual tension. Charlotte answers the door at Bill’s house, speaking of some kind of “New Temple.” Bill claims the car can’t be fixed tonight. They’re sent to Miss Julia’s B&B via an ominous trail at the back of Bill’s house and are warned not to stray off it. It’s highly likely this is because the locals shoot on sight.

Tessa is concerned that something is wrong, that they cannot trust this place or its residents. She’s upset Marcus doesn’t include her in his life decisions, even though she’s leaving everything behind for him. In this moment, Tessa had to decide whether to commit to the move and stay with Marcus, or turn back.

Miss Julia
Image by rayll They arrive at the B&B. Miss Julia seems nice, but it’s all a front, especially when you consider her kindness is for Tessa’s ears only. A man rushes down the stairs, telling Tessa he “wants no part” in what’s going on in Scratch Creek. Evidently, he was led here too. Perhaps the B&B is a disguise to hold people “outside of their circle.”

Meanwhile, Marcus overhears the housekeepers, Bobby and Henry, talk in secret about the “Morning Star blessing us” for providing Scratch Creek with two black men. Julia and a mysterious man discuss something in secret, just like Buck and Harry did back at the gas station. They follow traditional Christian beliefs like saving yourself for marriage, yet there’s internal conflict between the Old and New Scratch Temples as mentioned by Charlotte and in the guestbook.

Separation
Screenshot by Destructoid Room keys aren’t provided, excused by the door being able to “lock itself.” With no towels for Tessa to dry herself off and Marcus trapped outside their room, he’s sent to find some in the Church’s basement. As Marcus goes on his mini adventure where he gets locked inside, there’s a knock at the door back in Tessa’s room. The pair were purposely separated by Bobby and Henry, whereby Marcus finds a tunnel linking the B&B to the Church.

When Marcus returns with towels, Tessa suddenly has a cough, which is strange because Miss Julia had the same. This seemingly goes nowhere but may be related to the B&B’s poor water quality and how it isn’t a proper establishment. Perhaps there’s something in the water as Marcus has a surreal, spiritual dream trying to lead him to the Church. What’s ominous is that Julia tells Tessa there’s a big day tomorrow, though the couple are only staying for the night.

If you look out the window at 3:33am you can see a group of cultists moving through the graveyard with lanterns in preparation for Marcus’s arrival. The guestbook has a mix of positive religious experiences and unsettling ones, including a note left by Silas from Ironbark Lookout.

The reveal
Screenshot by Destructoid A cult member at the B&B front door tells Julia someone got away—the man who ran out when Tessa and Marcus arrived. He saw something and fled to the police station. The cultists searched, but Julia had already replaced him with Marcus.

Meanwhile, a hooded man with a sickle tried to take Marcus in his sleep. Interestingly. there’s another reference to Ironbark Lookout as the cultists are dressed the same. Though, Scratch Temple has more racist ideologies than what we saw in 2023’s episode. It appears that some kind of sacrificial ritual is in order for The Covenant of Old Scratch Temple. In this text, it describes the Children of Ham which has been misconstrued into black slavery. The Old Scratch Temple believed in the Curse of Ham. Everyone we met were part of the cult.

Fears to Fathom – Scratch Creek ending, explained
Image by rayll Tessa and Marcus escape the B&B and hide in their trailer at Bill’s house as Buck looks for them. Marcus decides in the worst possible moment he must profess his love to Tessa. This provides them with the plot armor they need to escape, as Buck doesn’t hear a thing, giving them ample time to unhook the trailer and drive away. Win-win for Tessa.

The couple file a report, but no incriminating evidence was found. It doesn’t help that Mitch, the Scratch Creek sheriff, is the cult leader. We get confirmation here that Jack’s story in Ironbark Lookout and Tessa and Marcus’s story are connected.

Like with all Fears to Fathom episodes so far, Scratch Creek only has one ending as it’s a retelling of events from Tessa and Marcus’s perspectives.
