Pavel Osipovich Sukhoi was born on July 22nd 1895. In the early 1910s, while a student in Gomel, he witnessed a flight by the famous aviator Sergei Utochkin; he loved it so much that he decided to dedicate his life to aircraft design. During the 1920s and 1930s, he worked under the supervision of Andrei Tupolev, and after developing the BB-1 bomber, he was given his own design bureau. The BB-1 — designated the Su-2 — saw extensive use during the early stages of the Second World War.
