Bethesda reveals the future of Fallout, Elder Scrolls and Starfield
Bethesda Game Studios just announced its future plans for its major franchises, including Fallout and The Elder Scrolls. In short, the company is working on new entries in both series, as well as continuing to make content for Starfield. It also announced a new Creation Engine and confirmed the partnership with Obsidian, which they’d only say is for “a new Fallout project.” According to the announcement, “Fallout 5 is currently in preproduction. The Elder Scrolls VI is our primary development focus today, with the majority of our team currently working on the next chapter of the franchise.” It also confirmed that it is working on remasters of Fallouts 3 and New Vegas, as well as its partnership with Obsidian on a “new Fallout project.” In addition to the above, it also adds that it’s continuing to make content for Starfield, saying, “As we enter Year 3, we’ll continue expanding the Settled Systems with new stories, targeted gameplay improvements, and additional updates, while preparing for the launch of new Starborn content next year.” It added that its new projects are being built in Creation Engine 3, “a shared technology platform we’ve been building since Starfield’s launch.” The timing of the announcement feels prescient, given that Xbox’s studios are still reeling from massive layoffs. Bethesda Game Studios was named among those effected, but it seems the studio is eager to assure everyone that its biggest titles will not suffer for it. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma shared the announcement, adding on social media, “These worlds have earned a special place with hundreds of millions of people over many years. I’m looking forward to what’s next, including the partnership with Obsidian on a new Fallout game and closer collaboration with ZeniMax Online Studios on The Elder Scrolls.” She made no mention of how the layoffs, particularly at ZeniMax Online Studios, might affect what’s next.
