New numbers show GTA 6 development might cost more than previous estimates, which were already staggering
It's difficult to overestimate the importance of a game like Grand Theft Auto 6 when it comes to the games industry. The latest sales numbers for Grand Theft Auto V indicate that the most recent GTA game sold over 225 million copies since launching in 2013, so the anticipation for its sequel is unmeasurable. With that hype, and many years of development, though, comes a hefty cost when it comes to creating it. Screenshot via Rockstar Games YouTube It's been no secret that GTA 6 has cost quite a bit of money to develop over the years, with experts estimating at least $2 billion invested already. But new numbers may suggest it's higher than originally thought. This past weekend, a Redditor shared their findings after perusing public documents detailing Rockstar Games' financials to do some math into just how much GTA 6 has cost to develop since it entered full production in 2019 after Red Dead Redemption 2 launched. The number is shocking. On personnel wages and salaries alone, since 2019, Rockstar has spent over $2.1 billion, and that's just from Rockstar North, the main studio behind the games that's supported by other Rockstar studios around the world. That's also without factoring in other factors like marketing, making the technology behind the game, lawyer fees, and a variety of other expenses that go into making a game of this massive scale. With all of these different facets in mind, it wouldn't be all that surprising for GTA 6 to end up costing well over $3 billion to make over the past seven-plus years. That would make it the most expensive entertainment product ever made, by a long shot, a record that it most likely already holds. For a stunning comparison, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is listed as the most expensive film ever made at around $447 million. GTA 6 utterly dwarfs that already. Because of this, I truly wouldn't be surprised if GTA 6 ended up with a retail price at or approaching $100 like rumors have suggested in the past. But I also think that most gamers will be ready and willing to part with that much cash if it means another GTA game is in their consoles. Screenshot via Rockstar Games YouTube We may never know exactly how much GTA 6 cost to become a reality. But I don't think it's hyperbole to say that Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive will make its money back more than a few times over, either. GTA 6 is scheduled to launch later this year on Nov. 19, so the game's marketing should be ramping up within the next few months. Buckle up.
