I thought I’d give the original Slay the Spire a quick look and now I’m a convert for life

While everyone's talking about Slay the Spire 2 and its stellar success, I've been browsing the Steam store incessantly over the past few days trying to find something that'd let me kick back and relax with my new DualSense controller. And on that search, I came across several titles, both in my own library and on the store itself. I landed first on Devil May Cry 5, but that quickly ran up as I completed the game in two sittings and found myself yearning for more, something that'd let me sink in a lot of hours without spending my brainpower too much. That's when I chanced upon Slay the Spire, the first game, aptly discounted and priced at just under six euros. You know I had to buy it at that price, but little did I know that I had just secured an endless source of fun for literal pennies. The Silent is certainly my favorite character. Image via Mega Crit Last night, around three or four in the morning, I ran the game to see what it was all about. I left at around six, over two and a half hours after launching the title for the first time. I kept dying to the final boss of Act 2 - The City, who was constantly that same enemy who kept spawning minions that dealt an incredible amount of damage per turn. I tried three characters total, wanting so bad to learn how to play the Defect and master those orbs of his, failing to even make it to the end of Act 1 using him. The Silent proved to be my favorite of them all, though. Using poisons can genuinely break the game, and its mastery of doing damage to all enemies at once really helps when you want to clear large groups of mobs in as few turns as possible. On top of that, it can shield itself from most harm if you play your cards right (literally in this case), so that helped me reach the final boss of Act 3 - The Beyond today. I really wanted to love the Defect, but I just don't know how to play him effectively. Image via Mega Crit Games I'm yet to beat that boss, though, but after five hours in the game, I genuinely cannot believe how fun and addictive it actually is. I knew I was going to get stuck in because roguelikes are my jam, but never could I have predicted it would kick in as soon as I first laid my hands upon it. With Slay the Spire 2 out now, I'm inclined to try that one as well. Now, I won't prejudicate and will offer all my available time and effort to clear Slay the Spire 1 at least once before moving on to the sequel. There's a lot to play, unlock, and do in the original title that I think I'm set for a good while before I run out of fun to have. What an incredible game this is, and it really opened my eyes up to the success of Slay the Spire 2 and why people would want to see this formula improved and expanded in meaningful ways. It's just amazing. The post I thought I’d give the original Slay the Spire a quick look and now I’m a convert for life appeared first on Destructoid.
